ADQuals
All students must choose to study an Additional Qualification (AdQual) alongside their FTV course. You can choose from:
A Level English
If you choose to do an A Level in English, you will study the OCR English Literature course. As a student on this course, you will explore your voice as a storyteller and consider what qualities your own ‘voice’ might hold. You will create interesting ideas for new screen content and build your confidence as strong communicators.
As part of the course, students study pre-1900 poetry and drama: The Duchess of Malfi by Jonathan Webster, selected poems by Christina Rosetti, and Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Students also undertake a thematic study, in our case: The Immigrant Experience. The set texts for this are The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid and The Lonely Londoners by Sam Selvon. In addition to these texts we will investigate a wide range of literature exploring the immigrant experience, seeking to understand what writers have to say about the theme, how they say it, and why.
A Level Maths
If you choose to do Maths at A Level, you will study the Pearson Edexcel Maths A Level. As a student of this course, you will build your problem solving skills and deepen your technical understanding in relation to film and TV. You will study topics such as trigonometry, calculus and statistical analysis - much of which can support more technical roles within the industry.
As part of the course, you will strengthen your numeracy skills, which are key in any film and TV department. Alumni who studied the LSA Maths A Level have gone onto roles such as Accounts Trainee on the upcoming live action, Wicked and Netflix’s Accounts Trainee Programme.
EPQ (Extended Project Qualification)
If you choose this pathway you will be working towards the Extended Project Qualification (Edexcel Pearson). This course is all about authentic creative practice. You will work towards developing an original, creative artefact for a modern platform and audience - it is worth half an A Level. Artefacts might include: a script, a short film, a music video, a diorama, costume designs… or anything else that the creative industries might be interested in!
Before starting this course you will study ‘Screencraft’ - the art of telling stories and creating meaning on screen. This will be both an inquiry based course and a creative course. You will initially study the HBO mini-series Chernobyl (2019) and investigate a chosen area of interest, producing a case study on how screen craft has been employed. In the second term you will study the BBC anthology series Small Axe (2020) and develop your investigatory skills producing another case study. In both terms you will also produce a proposal for a new TV series, under the headings ‘Disaster Stories’ and ‘Untold Stories’. By investigating creative practice and applying it in a creative proposal, you will prepare yourself for the EPQ course, which starts in Term 3 of Y1.
Core Maths
Core Maths is a Level 3 qualification worth half an A-Level, designed to explore GCSE level maths skills in context. For example, Core maths students apply percentage skills to contexts such as the gender pay gap, inflation, student loans and tax. The course has been designed to maintain and develop real-life, day-to-day maths skills, such as using spreadsheets, budgeting, financial maths and project management. It is designed for students who want to keep up their valuable maths skills, but are not planning to take A Level Maths. We follow the AQA 2B route, on critical path and risk analysis, using probability in context to consider insurance and risk.
GCSE Take 2
Students who don’t achieve Grade 4 pass at GCSE in either Maths or English Literature/Language will have to retake when they join LSA. We offer intensive support in preparation for retakes, with four hours a week of lessons dedicated to helping you revise as you approach your exams.
